Creative Arts Classes:
Chair Caning/Seat Weaving Learn the honored art of chair caning with this marvelous professional instructor who has been teaching this class to senior adults for over 20 years. Sharon not only teaches but also shares this craft with area antique dealers and furniture restorers. This class teaches cane weaving, rush, splent and pressed cane restoration. Chairs in need of caning are either donated or brought in by class participants and Sharon works with the class to decide what type of cane seat the chair needs. She then works with each class participant individually to ensure that they have the tools and supplies needed for their work. Participants can join this casual and fun class at any time October through June.
Get Fired Up with Ceramics Nancy has been teaching this great ceramics program in the Capital District for over 25 years and her students love her! Students from beginner to seasoned artists learn how to take clay in greenware form, paint it, and make it into a ceramic form of glass, complete with firing the pieces in the kilns (with Nancy's assistance) that are located at the Senior Center.
Art for Anyone Lucinda is a professional artist who has enjoyed teaching to a variety of different ages, youth, adults and seniors, including the last three years of instruction both drawing and painting in a variety of media at the Louise Corning Senior Center . Her interest in art began at an early age with several generations of artists in her family. She has seven years of higher education in Fine Arts, and shows her artwork on a regular basis in the area. Lucinda's ability, experience and enthusiasm in drawing, painting and sculpture encourage each individual in the class to participate fully with the experience of self expression by exploring the tools and language of art. Whether using pencil on paper, watercolors, acrylics or oil paints, she offers each student individual instruction, based on their own interest and abilities. Participants, from beginners to those with previous experience, can join this class at any time from September through June.

Sew Can You! Norma has been teaching this popular sewing program for Senior Services at the Louise Corning Center for over 25 years! Norma originally learned to sew by watching her mother, who made all of her clothes by hand. As she grew, she learned how to make her own clothing creations. She is also a natural home decorator who loves to create “picture perfect” rooms – sewing drapes, curtains, bedspreads, pillows, etc. In her house, if it is made of fabric, she probably made it herself. Norma specializes in making things simple in ways that are easy for everyone. Anyone can sew! This class welcomes beginners and is open to anyone (men/women) 60 or older. The class does not have a set agenda as each student brings in whatever project they want to work on – from alterations to making maid-of-honor dresses, slacks, capes, holiday decorations, nightgowns, table runners, you name it! This program runs from September through June.
